Primary problem that it solves: Removes the need to for users to remember multiple different passwords for different applications and systems (called Service Provider).
Here, there is one Identity Provider that verifies the identity of a user, and confirms this to the Service Provider. The Service Provider trusts the Identity Provider, and allows access to the resource/service that the user originally requested.
